When you see some place you can’t reach, or some door you can’t access, or something you can’t figure out how to activate, know that you will eventually get that tool – and when you return to see what’s been quietly making you crazy for many hours you’ll finally have satisfaction. There are no difficulty settings to choose from in Tunic there is only “Figure It Out.Īs in a classic, top-down Zelda, Tunic has many Metroidvania-style layers to eventually peel back, and this, too, is part of what I love about it. There’s a certain magic to doing this – everything is entirely up to your interpretation – and Tunic manages to capture this lightning in a bottle both in its vague story and mechanics. This was how I first experienced some of my favorite titles like Mother 3, Cave Story, Persona 5, Dragon Quest X, and more. The use of the gibberish language reminds me a lot of playing games in other languages. There are quite a few moves you have inherently that you don’t discover until well into the adventure and even after the credits roll, so replays and speedruns are bound to be incredibly interesting to watch.
While it’s easy to figure out you can roll by tapping A, it’s less obvious that you can extend the roll by holding the button or run by holding the button for even longer.

Hidden throughout the world are also pages of the game’s manual written in the gibberish language the game uses. While you start with nothing but the clothes on your back, you quickly find several items to use by assigning them to the X, Y, and B buttons such as a stick (which you essentially replace with a sword), a magic wand, or even a gun. It’s fairly typical on the surface, but again there’s a lot more to it as you get further in that I am loath to spoil. In Tunic, you take on the role of a little fox exploring the land you washed up onĮarly on, you discover a spectral fox person trapped in a magical prison and set about freeing them by collecting three colored keys. The mix of both styles works very well thanks in part to those cutbacks. Dying may make you lose some currency, but every item you obtained and puzzle you completed stays in that state, so the losses aren’t severe when respawning. Stamina also refills rather quickly, so you won’t spend much time waiting around. Dodging and shield blocking may take stamina, but attacking does not, so you’re encouraged to go on the offensive more rather than stay defensive and rely on counters. Those who hear about the Souls influence might brace themselves for the worst, but Tunic seems to counter the turn-offs for those who aren’t fans of the series. The game’s purpose and method of playing are somewhat oblique what dialog is presented to the player is generally of an undecipherable language though selected characters or words will be legible in the player’s language that may hint towards puzzle solutions. The game is structured similar to The Legend of Zelda, with progress limited to certain areas of the game world until the player has collected a new weapon or ability for the fox to use. Tunic is played nominally in an isometric view, allowing the player to maneuver their character, an anthropomorphic fox, around the game’s world, interacting with objects and fighting enemies if necessary the player can switch to a more top-down view in combat.
